WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
5 JUNE 2019
World Environment Day (WED) is on June 5th every year. 5th June 2019 marks the 48th World Environment Day. It is an environmental awareness day, established by the United Nations for more than four decades. The aim of the Day is to raise awareness of the environment and specific environmental issues.
Each year a host country is selected as the representative for the theme of the WED. This year’s theme is “Air Pollution”. We can’t stop breathing, but we can do something about the quality of air that we breathe.
So, how can we support the cause in this global day? How your organization can enhance its environmental performance? Taking care of the environment is possible from the companies and organizations by implementing the Environmental Standards (ISO 14001, EMAS and others), which can consider of the problems we cause on the natural environment and recommend solutions to small and big-scale actions. This is a key to big solutions, as Environmental Standards can:
- Minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by their activities
- Meet regulatory requirements
- Achieve continual improvement of their environmental performance
- Improve business performance through more efficient use of resources.
The ISO 14000 family includes 23 standards, including the famous ISO 14001, addressing particular challenges such as life cycle analysis and greenhouse gases. In addition, ISO offers a wide-ranging portfolio of standardized sampling, testing and analytical methods to deal with specific environmental challenges. It has developed more than 650 International Standards for the monitoring of environmental aspects as the quality of air, water and soil. Other environment-related work by ISO contains standards for buildings’ design, or for improving energy efficiency of existing ones.
You can celebrate the achievements of your environmental management system (EMS), if you have one, by support the WED 2019. If you do not have one, it is a great opportunity to build the support required to implement an EMS and start improving environmental performance in a more structured and practical way. It could also improve efficiency, decrease resource consumption and build on relationships with your stakeholders and interested parties.
If you would like to enhance your environmental performance, find out more about ISO 14001 and EMAS and their benefits here.
